Annie: any new year resolutions??
Austin: how about you?
Annie: I started my resolutions the week of thanksgiving
Annie: to lose weight and keep the weight off ...by doing it RIGHT
Annie: not stupid diet anymore
Austin: Oh, that's a good one.
Annie: I am eating healthy and eating whatever I want...
Austin: The above URL is part of mine.
Annie: and exercise a lot to build muscle
Austin: (Which focus on Free Software -> 我的志業)
Annie: I see...
Annie: ha...nice try
Annie: you are fighting against bill gates
Annie: a battle that you won't win
Austin: Well, not exactly against BillG
Austin: We're against Non-open, non-royalty free, IT standards.
Annie: why do you have to be a tech geek to go against the flow??
Annie: why can't you be the tech geek that go with the flow and makes a shit load of money??
Annie: I am sure your wife will be really happy
Austin: Such as Open Document Format instead of proprietary ones.
Austin: Name one whose last name is not Gates :)
Annie: all those engineers that are working for google
Annie: they make a lot of money every year
Annie: I am not talking about being billionaire
Austin: Fact is, in other industries, there is no such Monopoly that
has GIANT market share like MS.
Annie: I am talking about making a good $150K USD - $300K USD
Austin: Oh, Google is good. They are very open to Free/Open Source Softare!
Annie: with this kind of salaary...you will have a very good life
Austin: I would LOVE to be hired by Google, the company use tons of
Annie: yeah..but google is also trying to build their monopoly in search as well
Annie: well then
Annie: go apply
Austin: Google is famous for the motto: "Do no evil"
Austin: And I think many people are keeping an eye on them to make sure they do what they say.
Austin: Not until they have Google Taiwan.
Annie: well, a lot of people in the industry said that motto has being evolving..and changing
Austin: They do have Google China, though.
Annie: taiwan to too small of a market
Annie: no matter how you look at it
Annie: google usually puts Print Ads on NYTimes or major news paper
for some crazy techinical questions...and to apply the job..you will
need to answer the questions first
Austin: Google is very good at making money from "Brilliant biz model + Open Source Software + Great talent + Only APIs but no souce codes"
Austin: Some very small OSS company do employ overseas home worker.
Austin: But not Google, I think :p
Austin: The "Only-APIs-but no-source-code" model create a great
balance between attract/retain users, and lock-down users on THEIR services.
Austin: Cuz you cannot get their source code and build another Google Searce/Earth/Maps/whatever. Period.
Austin: Talking about making a good $150K USD - $300K USD --> Per year?
Austin: What would be the equivalent if working in Taiwan?
Annie: well, the equivalent is to make $150K NT - $300K NT a year
Annie: then you can have a good life
Annie: I think
Annie: at least that's when I was sitting at cram school and those
teachers told us ...
Annie: and that should be our goal after getting our MBA and head back to taiwan
Annie: I am not sure inflation in the past 5 yrs had made a difference or not
Austin: 150K NT -> 15萬
Austin: That should be a month, not a year!
Annie: I mean 150萬
Annie: to 300萬
Annie: of course, if you have 4 kids to feed+ a mortgage to pay then
150萬 doesn't get you that far
Annie: regardless...150萬 is good pay check
Annie: of course 300萬 is even better...ha ha
Annie: sorry..all I can think about is money
Austin: let me see, if I stay in Agilent, we got 13.5 months of pay per year.
Annie: I want to pay off mortgage a lot faster...so I have to run the
Austin: Which means my month salary should be 11萬多 到 22萬多
Austin: Before or after tax?
Austin: Money IS important.
Annie: before tax
Austin: And you can say that by playing with Linux from college, I got my first job in 政大
Austin: And I got my job in Agilent.
Annie: how much you are getting paid per month?
Austin: I use all the Unix/Linux techniques, day in and day out.
Austin: That's a secret :p
Annie: actually, if your combine HHI( house hold income) is 150萬...then you should be able to have a good life too
Austin: HHI == 家戶收入？
Annie: HHI ( Household income)
Annie: for your situation, HHI = your salary+ your wife's
Austin: yeah, I get it now.
Annie: I think that's the rule of thumb
Austin: Well, no matter how much, I'm happy with our HHI now :)
Annie: that's good
Annie: if you are happy
Austin: And we'll try to earn more.
Annie: if it's enough for you
Annie: I am happy with our HHI as well
Austin: But not at the expense of losing the time to spend with the family.
Annie: but we have so much expenses...
Annie: oh...no....not like our dad
Annie: he never actually take time to enjoy all the money he makes
Annie: I think I am enjoying life on the other hand
Austin: I'll try to balance Family, work, and OSS :)
Austin: Work puts food on my table, family give me love, and OSS give me hope :)
Austin: Me too, but I also need to ensure that my family is ALSO
enjoying their life.
Austin: And my co-workers are enjoying working with me.
Austin: And my OSS virtual-friends are enjoying my knowledge-sharing.
[連 radiant 這個字都搬出來了，真是陽光的牡羊座啊]
Austin: In short, I hope that I can be radiant (H)
Austin: That's very Aries, right?
Annie: that's a good goal to have
Austin: Glad to hear you say so :D
Annie: it's a big goal to accomplish too
Austin: Yeah I know.
Austin: Try to make everyone happy, which is almost impossible :p
